(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
I thought I would take this opportunity to announce my New Year's Resolution. Mind you I've never kept any previous year's resolutions, but I think it's probably best to keep this one, if not for the sake of my sanity then at least for that of my co-workers.
I shall limit my intake of Benny Benassi songs/clones/remixes to no more than one per week.
The Europeans have dubbed this particular brand of cheese Hypnotech. First you take THE Benassi bass line (first popularized in his 2002 hit, Satisfaction). Start with a saw wave, detune it a bit, throw a sine underneath if you need more sub, add appropriate filters and mess with the LFOs. Then add a synthesized MacTalk-sounding vocal, male or female (don't forget to have it speak the name of your group or at least rattle off the names of some major world cities). Lastly, find yourself an anthem from the 60's or 80's that everybody's familiar with to use as a chorus and give it the Daft Punk/Mr. Oizo cut-up dirty filtered electro-house treatment. Voila! You've got yourself an instant global club hit.
Now I know some of you skeptics out there might find this pretty ridiculous. But this is a serious health issue we're talking about here. No, really! If you listen to TOO much of this stuff, you WILL start talking in that roboticized monotone voice that you hear in just about every one of these damn songs. What really concerns me is that Mr. Benassi seems to have started a new sub-genre that shows no sign of going away.
Please take proper precautions by strictly limiting the dosage you receive of any of the following "artists"/viral carriers: Royal Gigolos, Global Playboys aka Global Deejays, Vinylshakerz, and The Boogie Pimps.
While all of these groups seem to originate in Germany, due to the global reach of the internet and given the fact that each successive strain seems to be increasingly virulent, NO ONE is immune from the long-lasting effects regular listening can have.
Please be careful everyone, and have a wonderful and safe 2006.

boobs and power tools
ooooh, no mention of the FABULOUS video?!?! i know, this post is mainly about the millions of remixes/mash-ups/clones of *that sound* but personally, if i had never seen that MESMERIZING video, who knows if i'd ever appreciate the club fodder of mr benassi. voluptuous women in spiked high heels handing power tools is THEE perfect visualisation of the benassi bass line!
swimming in vodka-------ed
oh yes, the video
The video definitely roxxx! I actually do link to it in the post and was considering discussing it since it's so integral to the entire phenomenon. Since we're on the subject, while the Satisfaction video is fantastic, seeing the video for Call On Me by Eric Prydz had to have been one of my personal highlights of 2005. I almost considered buying this DVD but it's Region 2, so I couldn't play it in my DVD player (Anyone want to burn me a copy?) The Call On Me parody video (site NSFW) is good for a larf. There's also a video for the song I linked (Global Deejays' Flashdance) which seems to be trying to accomplish the same goals [pelvic thrusts, stripper moves, spandex leotards] plus another of theirs for San Francisco.
Filter Skilter
Eric Prydz, thou has kilt 80's music for the rest of us. There are a million derivative works now. I suppose we can blame the French for filter-house, but they never used it for this much evil.
Who's Your Daddy?
Might as well post an update since for some strange reason, my hits on this subject have totally died down. Mr. Benassi continues to serve up the cheddar with his latest, Who's Your Daddy. It boasts an equally scandalous video which is an homage to 70s porn, with censored and uncensored versions. At this point though, there's no innovation with the music, it's not nearly as sexy or hilarious a video as Satisfaction, and he's fallen victim to his own formulaic success. Oh well. If you need even more, you can go backstage or download a promo pack. Whee!
