Rise of the Fembots
Unfortunately for all male robots like myself, females into electro, or females making electro for that matter, are few and far between. Electro, by and large, is a male-dominated affair. This makes my quest to "make a circuit" with an advanced-level functioning female droid that much more challenging. I'm not entirely sure why this is the case - maybe electro music is more masculine by nature, more cold and sterile versus warm and organic. But fear not, male machine minions! There are a number of fembots on the rise to ameliorate this imbalance.
The Knife are Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson, brother and sister duo hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, who have been releasing music for the last five years. The Knife's music cuts deep within the listener [sorry, they've been waiting for someone to make that joke]. While there's only one fembot as a member of the group, there are two in this great video.
[From site biography by Craig McLean, January 2006] This is the world of The Knife: precise, particular, dark, occult, funny-peculiar, funny-ha-ha. Silent Shout, their most recent album's jaw-dropping fusion of technology and emotion, circuitry and the soul, melodrama and melody, will leave you gasping. Listen to and buy their truly unique brand of music here. Special note to NY and CA-based fans: The Knife plays three US dates in the beginning of November. One in NY, one in SF and one in LA. Get cut!
Terry Poison, an all-girl electro-pop trio from the Holy Land via Tel Aviv, Paris and Norway, are female attack droids who are poised to take over the universe. Backed by beatmaster/whizkid Mr. Bruno Grife, they've kicked around that part of the world the last couple years and will soon bring their sleazy blend of bubblegum synth-punk to a noise merchant/venue near you. Get intimate with the ladies at their MySpace page.
Our last robot of the fairer sex is none other than the world famous Ellen Allien. This DJane slash Producer slash Artist has been working the clubs and making the asses shake uncontrollably since '92. Founder and owner of Berlin-based label BPitch Control, Ms. Allien most recently teamed up with Apparat for the groundbreaking album Orchestra of Bubbles, a perfect blend of the algorithm-based pathways of IDM and the dancefloor widthways of electro. Try to catch her the next time she graces your environs with a visit. Aspiring fembots take note: Ellen should be your new role model.
The Fembot Invasion Is Growing.
